During Take-Two’s fiscal conference call for its financial year ended on March 31st, ” Chief Executive Officer Strauss Zelnick was asked to discuss the company’s prognosis in connection with a potential launch of a new PlayStation console from Sony in 2020.
Zelnick said that if he doesn’t have any capacity to comment on the programs of another company (in this case Sony Interactive Entertainment), he considers Take-Two has navigated transitions in console cycles pretty well so far, and they’re very proud of this.
Historically, through a transition period, the challenges can be quite important, however Take-Two was able to get around them with its labels create “that the maximum quality properties that resist appropriate behavior in console transition intervals. ”
Zelnick recalls that during the transition between both PS3 and PS4 there has been a lot of noise in the marketplace about the challenges of older games. On the other hand wasn’t challenged in the least. Since the quality of the catalogue was large they did “ exceptionally well ”.
He continued by mentioning using a “restricted number of the highest quality releases” and having games that tend to perform well as catalogue names (IE: they sell well some time after launch), transition intervals create less risk for Take-Two. Due to the fact that the games itself are extremely large quality, as new platforms have been released they can continue to execute.
As an example, Grand Theft Auto V was developed for the previous generation, and yet “it is still the standard bearer for this generation,” which according to Zelnick is “outstanding” and something that the writer is “grateful to Rockstar for and incredibly pleased with. ”
Zelnick went on to mention that in the event of the launch of new platforms, the publisher will decide what to expect based on its views of possible success, but he also discovered the PC platform has become “a very, very important” section of what the firm does, driven by electronic supply. Thatt true for console names but it’s the case now.
Zelnick concluded by describing the business isn’t platform-agnostic yet, but he considers that it’s likely to occur later on.
“Does that mean that the company is receding, everything gets receptive, and we neglect’t care what brand is about the box? Not at least. I wouldn’t rule out the possibility of generations. But it can get us nearer to a stage where we truly can be platform-agnostic as an industry. I would say individualsre not there yet, but that day will come. ”
